Chatuchak Weekend Market: How Not to Get Lost
Chatuchak is split into 27 numbered sections. Walk in without a plan and you'll circle the same alley three times.
The section numbers are the whole trick.
Getting there
MRT Kamphaeng Phet, Exit 2 → comes up inside the market
BTS Mo Chit, Exit 1 → five minutes on foot across the parkTake the MRT. The exit puts you in the middle of it.
When
Saturday and Sunday are the real market. Some sections open midweek at a fraction of the scale.
Arrive 9–11am. After 1pm the heat and crowds become genuinely unpleasant. There are roofs but no air conditioning.
Friday night has a separate night market with a different feel.
What's where
| Sections | Sells |
|---|---|
| 2–4 | Pets, plants, garden |
| 5–6 | Vintage, secondhand, antiques |
| 7–8 | Ceramics, homeware |
| 10–26 | Clothing and accessories — the largest area |
| 22–26 | Handicrafts and souvenirs |
| Around the clock tower | Food |
If you only want souvenirs, go straight to sections 22–26. No need to walk the rest.
Not getting lost
Use the clock tower as your anchor. It sits in the centre and is visible from most of the market. Lost? Head back to it.
Grab a map at the entrance. Free ones with section numbers are handed out.
Section numbers are printed on the walkway pillars. Look up.
Haggling
Priced tags mean fixed price. Don't haggle there — it's awkward for both sides.
No tag means negotiable. Ask at three stalls first to establish the going rate, then start.
Bundle. "How much for three?" works far better than shaving a single item.
Bring
- Cash in small notes — cards mostly not accepted
- A tote bag — bags are charged or not given
- Water — expensive inside
- Comfortable shoes — you'll walk kilometres
- Wet wipes — nowhere to wash your hands
In short
- MRT Kamphaeng Phet beats BTS Mo Chit
- Go in the morning
- Souvenirs are in sections 22–26
- Navigate by the clock tower
- Cash and a tote bag are essential
Chatuchak runs in daylight at weekends. For evenings, the night market guide lists what is still open. The air-conditioned alternative is the big three malls, and either way you get there on the BTS or MRT.
