Bangkok's Big Three Malls Compared: CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, ICONSIAM

Bangkok's large malls have distinct personalities. You don't need to see all of them.

CentralWorld

Skywalk from BTS Chit Lom, or walk from Siam.

One of the largest in the city, spanning mid-range to premium. Good for browsing without a plan.

Attached to it: Zen department store, Isetan, and across the road the Erawan Shrine — a well-known landmark worth ten minutes.

The forecourt hosts Bangkok's main Christmas tree and New Year countdown.

Siam Paragon

Connected directly to BTS Siam and linked by walkways to Siam Center and Siam Discovery — three buildings without stepping outside.

Worth going for:

  • Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World — aquarium in the basement. The choice if you have children
  • Gourmet Market — basement food hall, excellent for souvenirs
  • Food hall mixing Thai and international

Luxury brands occupy the ground floor; upper floors are mainstream.

ICONSIAM

Across the river. You take a free shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin, and the boat ride is half the appeal.

Worth going for:

  • SookSiam — basement level, an indoor recreation of a Thai floating market with regional food and crafts. This is the highlight
  • Riverside terrace at sunset
  • Evening fountain show

The most expensive of the three. Go for the spectacle and the food rather than the shopping.

Choosing

One day only → Siam Paragon. BTS-connected, aquarium and food hall in one building.

With children → Siam Paragon.

Sunset and atmosphere → ICONSIAM.

General shopping → CentralWorld.

Several in one go → From BTS Siam, walk Paragon → Siam Center → CentralWorld on the skywalk.

Worth knowing

VAT refund. Spend above the threshold and you can reclaim at the airport. Ask in-store for the paperwork.

The skywalk network connects Siam to Chit Lom without going outside. In this heat that matters.

Midday is the right time. Be indoors when it's hottest.

In short

  • Siam Paragon is the safe single choice
  • CentralWorld is the largest and most mainstream
  • ICONSIAM for the river, the boat, and SookSiam
  • Siam to Chit Lom connects on foot via skywalk

For a themed mall with a food floor worth the trip on its own, see the Terminal 21 guide. If you would rather shop markets than malls, start with Chatuchak in the daytime and the night markets after dark.
