Getting from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Central Bangkok: Four Options Compared
There are four sensible ways into Bangkok from Suvarnabhumi. Which one is right depends on how much luggage you have, how many of you there are, and what time you land.
The short version: alone and travelling light, take the train. Two or more people, or heavy bags, use an app.
The four options
Airport Rail Link Departs from beneath the terminal. Cheapest, and immune to traffic — which matters in Bangkok. The catch is that you'll transfer to the BTS or MRT at the end, and there are stairs and walkways along the way.
Ride-hailing app The fare is fixed before you accept. Door to door, no negotiation, and with two or more passengers the per-person cost is reasonable.
Airport taxi There's an official rank on the arrivals level. Useful when apps aren't matching. Airport surcharge and expressway tolls are added to the meter — that's normal, not a scam.
Pre-booked transfer A driver waits with a name board. The most expensive option, and the least stressful if you're landing late or visiting for the first time.
Choose by situation
| Situation | Take |
|---|---|
| Solo, one backpack | Airport Rail Link |
| Two or more people | Ride-hailing |
| Two or more large cases | Ride-hailing |
| Landing around midnight | Pre-booked or airport taxi |
| Apps not matching | Airport taxi rank |
Using a ride-hailing app here
You can't hail from the arrivals hall. Suvarnabhumi has a dedicated pick-up zone on a specific level, and you need to walk to it.
This trips up almost every first-time visitor. Follow the signage — the app also shows you the pick-up point.
Taking a taxi
Confirm the meter is running. If the driver opens with a flat fare, you're free to decline and take the next car.
Show your destination on a map or in Thai script. It's much faster than describing it.
FAQ
When does the airport train stop running? Late evening. Exact times shift — check the official schedule before you land.
Is the train workable with luggage? Possible, but there are stairs and a transfer. With two large cases, take a car.
What about Don Mueang? Don Mueang has no airport rail connection. You'll need a bus or a car.
How long does the drive take? Highly variable. Bangkok traffic can double it. Build in buffer.
In short
- Luggage is the deciding factor
- Ride-hailing has a dedicated pick-up zone — don't hail from arrivals
- Taxis: meter only, decline flat quotes
- Landing late? Pre-book and stop thinking about it
Before you queue for a taxi, know the airport scams. Using an app avoids most of them, and here is how ride-hailing works here. Once you are in the city, everything runs on the BTS and MRT.
