7-Eleven Thailand: What Is Worth It and What Is Not
01What to actually eat there
| Item | What it is | Rating | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toasted sandwich | Ham and cheese, grilled flat | 4.5 | Breakfast. Ask them to heat it |
| Pork siu mai / dumplings | Steamed, by the counter | 4.3 | Any time. Point and pay |
| Corn on the cob cup | Sweet corn, butter, salt | 4.2 | Oddly good. Cheap |
| Khao kha moo box | Braised pork over rice | 3.8 | Late night. Not the real thing |
| Sticky rice with pork | Grilled skewer and rice | 4.0 | Quick lunch |
| Fresh milk / soy | Thai brands, very good | 4.4 | Morning |
| Iced coffee (All Cafe) | Counter-made | 3.6 | Sweet unless you say otherwise |
The toasted sandwich is the famous one and it deserves it. Pick it from the chiller, hand it to the cashier, and they will press it. The ham and cheese is the default; there are a dozen variants.
The hot counter by the till is where the dumplings and sausages live. This changes by branch and by time of day. Point at what looks busy.
02The drinks, which are the real strength
Thai convenience store fridges are excellent, and drinks cost between 10 and 25 baht — low enough that you can try something new every day without thinking about it.
Krating Daeng is the original Red Bull, made in Thailand, in a small brown glass bottle. No carbonation, much sweeter, much more concentrated than the European canned version. Worth trying once purely for the fact of it.
Oishi and Ichitan are the green tea brands. Note that the standard versions are sweet — genuinely sweet. Look for no sugar on the label if that is not what you want.
Thai fresh milk is very good and very cheap.
03What not to buy there
This is the half other guides skip.
| Item | 7-Eleven | Better option | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snack multipacks | Singles only | Big C / Lotus's | Large |
| Soap, shampoo, lotion | Small range, dearer | Supermarket | 30-50% |
| Herbal balms and inhalers | Stocked, marked up | Local pharmacy | Noticeable |
| Souvenir gift boxes | Limited | Supermarket / Gourmet | Large |
| Fruit | Pre-cut, small | Market stall | Much better fresh |
| Sunscreen | Tiny range | Watsons / Boots | Range and price |
The logic is straightforward. 7-Eleven is open, everywhere, air-conditioned and fast, and you pay for that in the price. For a sandwich at midnight, that is a fair trade. For twenty gifts, it is not.
04The things people do not know 7-Eleven does
Bill payment and top-ups. You can pay utility bills and top up SIM cards at the counter. Useful if you are staying a while.
Parcel drop-off. Many branches handle courier services.
Free sauces. Chilli, sugar, fish sauce sachets are on the counter for hot food. Take what you need.
They will heat almost anything. If you bought a box meal, they will microwave it and give you a fork.
Toilets are rare. Unlike some countries, most Thai 7-Elevens do not have public toilets. Use a mall.
05Paying
Cards work at most branches, and Thai QR payment is universal. Cash is always fine.
There is no tipping and no haggling. The price on the shelf is the price.
Bags are not automatic and cost a few baht at many branches. Carrying a small folding bag saves a little money and a lot of plastic.
06A realistic 7-Eleven routine
Morning. Toasted sandwich and fresh milk. Under 100 baht.
Afternoon. Cold drink and a corn cup when the heat wins.
Late night. Dumplings, or a box meal heated at the counter.
Never. The gift shopping. That is a supermarket job.
