Thai Food Ranked: The 10 Dishes Foreigners Should Order Instead of Pad Thai

THE 1-MINUTE VERSION
Pad Thai is the eighth best Thai dish and most visitors never get past it. In the TasteAtlas 2026 global rankings, roti took first place, phanaeng curry second and tom kha gai third. Pad Thai came eighth. The gap between what tourists order and what Thai people actually eat is the single biggest thing standing between you and good food here. Learn three dish names and the whole country opens up.

1. The ranking, and why it should annoy you

TasteAtlas publishes a global ranking of Thai dishes by rating. Here is the 2026 top ten.

#DishThaiWhat it actually is
1Rotiāđ‚āļĢāļ•ีPan-fried flatbread, Indian in origin, sold from carts with condensed milk and banana
2Phanaeng curryāļžāļ°āđāļ™āļ‡Thick curry, salty-sweet, peanut-forward. Not the same as red curry
3Tom kha gaiāļ•้āļĄāļ‚่āļēāđ„āļ่Coconut and galangal soup with chicken. Milder than tom yum
4Phat kaphraoāļœัāļ”āļāļ°āđ€āļžāļĢāļēMinced meat with holy basil. The default Thai lunch
5Khanom khrokāļ‚āļ™āļĄāļ„āļĢāļSmall round coconut-rice cakes, crisp outside, soft inside
6Khao niao mamuangāļ‚้āļēāļ§āđ€āļŦāļ™ีāļĒāļ§āļĄāļ°āļĄ่āļ§āļ‡Mango sticky rice
7Kai yangāđ„āļ่āļĒ่āļēāļ‡Grilled marinated chicken, Isaan style
8Pad Thaiāļœัāļ”āđ„āļ—āļĒThe one you already know
9Khao phatāļ‚้āļēāļ§āļœัāļ”Fried rice
10Phat si-ioāļœัāļ”āļ‹ีāļิ๊āļ§Wide rice noodles in dark soy

Two things stand out. Pad Thai is eighth, below a flatbread and a soup. And phat kaphrao is fourth — a dish most visitors have never ordered, and the single most common thing Thai people eat at lunchtime.

2. What foreigners order, rated honestly

This is what actually ends up on tourist tables, rated on whether it deserves the space in your stomach.

01Phat kaphrao rad khao āļœัāļ”āļāļ°āđ€āļžāļĢāļēāļĢāļēāļ”āļ‚้āļēāļ§★★★★★
Order this first. Every day if you want.
Minced pork or chicken stir-fried hard with holy basil, chilli and garlic, poured over rice, with a fried egg on top if you say kai dao. It is what half the country eats for lunch. It is on every menu in Thailand and it is almost never bad. If you learn one dish name, learn this one.
02Khao man gai āļ‚้āļēāļ§āļĄัāļ™āđ„āļ่★★★★★
The sauce is the dish. Do not skip it.
Poached chicken over rice cooked in the chicken fat, with a bowl of clear soup. The ginger-chilli-soybean sauce on the side is the entire point — the chicken is deliberately plain so the sauce can do the work. Go-Ang Pratunam is the famous one; look for the pink uniforms.
03Tom kha gai āļ•้āļĄāļ‚่āļēāđ„āļ่★★★★★
Better than tom yum for most people, and nobody orders it.
Coconut milk, galangal, lemongrass, lime, chicken. Rich and sour rather than blisteringly hot. If tom yum has ever been too aggressive for you, this is the soup you actually wanted.
04Phanaeng curry āļžāļ°āđāļ™āļ‡★★★★★
Thicker, sweeter, peanut-heavy. Order it over red curry.
Second in the global ranking and barely on the tourist radar. It is drier than a normal curry, almost a sauce, with a distinct peanut note. Ask for it and Thai staff will usually look pleased.
05Som tam āļŠ้āļĄāļ•āļģ★★★★☆
Say the heat level out loud or regret it.
Green papaya pounded with lime, fish sauce, palm sugar, chilli and peanuts. The Isaan version with fermented fish sauce is more pungent and not for a first attempt. Mai phet means not spicy. Say it and then say it again.
06Khao soi āļ‚้āļēāļ§āļ‹āļāļĒ★★★★★
A Chiang Mai dish worth ordering in Bangkok anyway.
Northern curry noodles: soft egg noodles in coconut curry broth, crisp fried noodles on top, pickled mustard greens and lime on the side. Arguably the best single bowl in Thai cuisine and almost no first-time visitor orders it.
07Moo ping and sticky rice āļŦāļĄูāļ›ิ้āļ‡★★★★★
Breakfast. Go before nine.
Grilled pork skewers with a ball of sticky rice, eaten walking. Many carts sell out and pack up by mid-morning. This is the breakfast the country runs on and it costs almost nothing.
08Pad Thai āļœัāļ”āđ„āļ—āļĒ★★★☆☆
Fine. Just stop ordering it every night.
There is nothing wrong with pad thai. It is sweet, safe and everywhere, which is exactly why it flattens your experience of Thai food if it is all you eat. Have it once, at Thipsamai if you want the famous version, then move on.
09Green curry āđāļāļ‡āđ€āļ‚ีāļĒāļ§āļŦāļ§āļēāļ™★★★★☆
Good. Just know phanaeng exists.
Genuinely excellent when made properly, with Thai aubergine and real basil. The tourist-menu version is often thin and oversweet. A good one is very good.
10Tom yum kung āļ•้āļĄāļĒāļģāļุ้āļ‡★★★★☆
Two versions exist and nobody warns you.
Nam sai is clear and sharp. Nam khon has evaporated milk and is creamy. They taste like different dishes. Order by name or accept whatever arrives.
11Mango sticky rice āļ‚้āļēāļ§āđ€āļŦāļ™ีāļĒāļ§āļĄāļ°āļĄ่āļ§āļ‡★★★★★
Only in season. Otherwise you are eating a disappointment.
Best roughly March to June when Thai mangoes are actually good. Outside that window you get an underripe mango and a bill. Worth planning a trip around.
12Roti āđ‚āļĢāļ•ี★★★★☆
First in the world rankings. Costs almost nothing.
Dough flipped thin, griddled, folded with banana and egg, drizzled with condensed milk and sugar. Sold from carts at night. It is a dessert, not a meal, and it is the single highest-rated Thai dish globally.

"Not spicy" is a negotiation, not an instruction
Thai mai phet and Western 'not spicy' are different scales. If you genuinely cannot handle heat, say it twice, point at the chillies and shake your head. Even then, som tam and anything from an Isaan menu will land hotter than you expect.

4. What to avoid, bluntly

Restaurants with photo menus in six languages on Khao San Road. The food is cooked for people who will never return.

Any place with a host outside waving a laminated menu. Good Thai restaurants do not need to stop you in the street.

Empty restaurants at 7pm. Thailand eats early and eats out constantly. An empty dining room at peak hour is information.

Pad thai at a hotel buffet. This is the single worst version of the dish available in the country and it is many visitors' only experience of it.

If you have a food allergy, the phrasebook matters more than the ranking. Fish sauce, shrimp paste and oyster sauce are in almost everything, including dishes that look vegetarian.

WHERE TO START
Day one, no idea what to do: phat kaphrao rad khao with a fried egg. Point at the menu, say the name, you will be fine.
You cannot handle chilli: khao man gai and moo ping. Both are mild by design.
You think you have had Thai food before: order phanaeng curry and khao soi. Neither is on a Western Thai menu and both outrank pad thai.
You are only here for a weekend: phat kaphrao, khao man gai, khao soi. Three meals, whole cuisine.
You want the famous ones: Thipsamai for pad thai, Go-Ang for chicken rice, Jay Fai for the crab omelette. Check opening days before you cross the city.
