Bangkok Malls: Which One for What
01The quick answer
| Mall | Best for | Value | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big C / Lotus's | Gifts, snacks, household, bulk | 4.8 | You want a day out |
| CentralWorld | General shopping, Thai brands | 4.3 | You want the cheapest price |
| Siam Paragon | Food hall, browsing, aquarium | 4.0 | You are on a budget |
| ICONSIAM | Views, indoor floating market | 4.2 | You need to buy something specific |
| Terminal 21 | Novelty floors, food court | 4.4 | You want serious shopping |
| MBK | Phone accessories, food court | 4.1 | You want brands |
02Where to actually spend money
Big C Ratchadamri is the answer to most shopping questions visitors have. Snacks, tea, honey, balms, soap, hair treatments, curry pastes — all at supermarket prices, all in one trip. It sits directly across a walkway from CentralWorld, so the two pair naturally.
Lotus's does the same job in other parts of the city.
Everything else on this list is a place to look, eat and be in air conditioning. That is a legitimate use of an afternoon; it is just not where you save money.
03The big three, briefly
Siam Paragon is glossy and expensive, with a genuinely excellent basement food hall — Gourmet Market — which is where to find premium Thai products in nicer packaging than the supermarkets. There is also an aquarium underneath, which is a serious option on a rainy day with children.
ICONSIAM is on the river and is the most impressive building of the lot. The indoor recreation of a floating market on the lower floor is touristy and also genuinely fun, and the river views are the best free thing in the mall. There is a free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier.
CentralWorld is the practical middle. Thai brands including Naraya, a big food court, and the Big C connection. If you only have time for one mall and you intend to buy things, this one plus Big C is the efficient choice.
04The other two
Terminal 21 gives each floor a different city — Tokyo, London, Istanbul, San Francisco — with the decor to match. It is a gimmick and it works. The top-floor food court, Pier 21, is one of the cheapest sit-down meals in central Bangkok, and the toilets on each floor are themed, which sounds silly and is somehow a highlight.
MBK is older, busier and cheaper. Phone cases, chargers, accessories on the lower floors; cheap clothing and souvenirs above; a large, good, inexpensive food court. Avoid the branded bags and watches — those are counterfeits, and they are confiscated at customs on the way home.
05Food courts, ranked
| Food court | Mall | Rating | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pier 21 | Terminal 21 | 4.7 | Cheapest sit-down meal in the centre |
| MBK food court | MBK | 4.3 | Large, varied, very cheap |
| Gourmet Market food hall | Siam Paragon | 4.2 | Better quality, higher price |
| CentralWorld basement | CentralWorld | 4.0 | Convenient, solid |
| ICONSIAM SookSiam | ICONSIAM | 4.1 | Fun, tourist-priced |
How Thai food courts work: you load money onto a card at a counter, use the card at the stalls, and refund the remaining balance on the way out. Do not forget the last step.
06The VAT refund, briefly
Malls are where a VAT refund claim actually becomes worthwhile, because you can clear the per-store minimum in one place on one day.
Spend at least 2,000 baht in a single store on a single day, reach 5,000 baht overall, and ask for the P.P.10 form at the till with your passport. It cannot be issued later.
At the airport, customs inspect the goods before you check your bags. That order is where most claims fail.
07Practical notes
The air conditioning is aggressive. Carry something with sleeves.
Skywalks connect a lot of this. Siam, CentralWorld, Big C and MBK are largely walkable to each other without going outside, which matters in April and in the rain.
Weekday mornings are calm. Weekend evenings are not.
Malls close around 9 to 10pm, earlier than you might expect.
