How to Get Thai Shopping Home Without Wrecking Your Suitcase

The 1-minute version
Almost every Thai shopping disaster is one of three things: a liquid that opened, a snack bag that burst, or chocolate that melted. All three are caused by the same two forces — cabin pressure dropping in the hold, and Bangkok being 35 degrees. Double-bag every liquid, lay snack bags flat in a single layer rather than stacking them, and buy chocolate on the last day. Solid balms, tins, inhalers and sheet masks all travel in the cabin and weigh nothing, so load your hand luggage with those and save the hold for the heavy liquids.

01The three failure modes

Liquids open in the hold. The cargo hold is pressurised but not to sea level, so the air inside a sealed bottle pushes outward. A cap that felt tight in your hotel room can weep or pop. Hair treatments, lotions, fabric softener and sauces are the usual culprits.

Snack bags burst. Crisp packets are inflated with nitrogen at sea level. At altitude they swell, and a swollen bag under the weight of your clothes splits. The snack is still edible; your suitcase is full of crumbs.

Chocolate melts. Not in the aircraft — in Bangkok, in the taxi, on the way to the airport, in an afternoon of carrying it around. Coconut chocolate is the classic casualty.

03How to pack the liquids

Tighten the cap, then tape over it. A strip of tape across the lid is the single highest-value thirty seconds in this whole process.

Bag it twice. One zip bag inside another. Not one. The outer bag is what saves your clothes when the inner one fails.

Put it in the middle of the case, surrounded by clothes, not in an outer pocket where it takes the impact.

Stand bottles upright if the case will be carried flat, and accept that baggage handlers will not respect this. The tape and the bags are what actually protect you.

04How to pack the snacks

Lay bags flat in a single layer across the top of your packed clothes. Do not stack them. Stacked bags crush each other.

Prefer several small bags to one large one. More surface area to distribute, less catastrophic when one goes.

Boxed snacks survive better than bagged ones, which is one genuine argument for the gift-boxed versions.

Accept some losses. A burst crisp packet is not a ruined trip. Just do not pack it next to a white shirt.

05Weight, which is the real constraint

Nothing on a Thai shopping list is expensive. The thing that costs money is excess baggage.

A large tub of hair treatment can weigh most of a kilo. Two of those plus a litre of fabric softener is three kilos before you have packed a single item of clothing. Airline excess charges will comfortably exceed what you saved.

If you are carry-on only

It is entirely possible to bring back a good Thai haul with no hold bag.

Inhalers, balms, tins, soap, sheet masks, tea, dried fruit, snacks and solid toothpaste all travel in the cabin. That is a full set of gifts for a lot of people and it weighs almost nothing.

What you give up is the liquid category: lotions, hair treatments, softener, sauces. If those are the point of your trip, you need a hold bag.

07The VAT refund complication

If you are claiming the 7 percent VAT refund, one rule overrides all packing logic: customs inspect your goods before you check your bags in.

That means the items you are claiming on must be accessible and with you at the customs desk, not already on the belt. Pack them so you can show them, then repack and check in afterwards.

This is the single most common reason VAT claims fail, and it has nothing to do with the paperwork.

Who this is for
→Anyone doing a supermarket haul — tape and double-bag every liquid. Non-negotiable.
→Carry-on travellers — inhalers, masks, tins, soap, tea. A full gift list with no hold bag.
→Anyone buying chocolate — last day only, and keep it in the hotel fridge until you leave.
→VAT refund claimants — keep the goods out of your checked bag until customs have seen them.
