Thai Skincare Brands Worth Buying, and Three That Are Not

The 1-minute version
Thai drugstores are excellent value for sun protection, cleansing and oil control, and mediocre value for anything promising to change your skin tone. Snail White is the famous one and the plain white jar is the version to buy. Srichand is the quiet one locals rate, and its powders and sunscreens are the real find. Mistine sells enormous range at very low prices, which means both bargains and duds. Skip whitening claims, skip anything sold outside a proper shop, and check your own skin's tolerance before you buy five of something.

Srichand is the one Thai women name when you ask. It has been around for decades, it started with translucent powder, and its sun care is well regarded. It is not the brand on the tourist displays, which is exactly why it is worth knowing.

Snail White is the brand tourists have heard of. The core product is a thick night cream in a plain white jar containing snail secretion filtrate, which is a moisturising and soothing ingredient rather than a transformative one. The gold version costs roughly double and does not feel twice as good.

Mistine is enormous — makeup, skincare, sun care, body — at very low prices. Some of it is genuinely good value. Some of it is not. The sensible approach is to buy one of something before you buy five.

02What Thailand is genuinely good at

Sun care. This is the real answer. Thai sunscreens are formulated for heat and humidity, so they are lighter and less greasy than what you may be used to, and they cost a fraction. If you buy one category, buy this one.

Oil control. Translucent powders, blotting papers, mattifying primers. A tropical country has spent a long time solving this problem.

Cleansing. Cleansing waters, balms and foams are cheap and plentiful.

Sheet masks. Very cheap, sold in bulk, weigh almost nothing. The best value-per-gram item in any Thai drugstore.

03What to skip

Anything sold on whitening. A large share of the shelf is marketed this way. Realistically these products moisturise, exfoliate gently and add sun protection — all useful, none of it a dramatic change in tone. Buy them as moisturisers if you like them, not as a transformation.

Products bought outside a proper shop. Counterfeits exist, particularly of the famous brands. Buy at Watsons, Boots, Eveandboy, or a supermarket. Not at a night market stall, and not at a price that seems impossible.

Anything with an ingredient list you cannot read. If the packaging is Thai-only and you have sensitive skin, that is a reason to pass.

Patch test, especially here
You are buying several unfamiliar products at once, in a hot climate, while your skin is already dealing with sun and air conditioning. Test on your inner arm and introduce one new thing at a time. If something stings or reddens, stop using it — and this is general product information, not medical advice.

Eveandboy is the one most visitors do not know about and should. It is a large Thai beauty retailer with a deep range and open testers, and it stocks local brands the chains do not.

05
A sensible first basket

If you want a short list rather than a shopping spree:

One Thai sunscreen. The single best-value thing on the shelf.

One translucent powder, if you have oily skin. Srichand's is the classic.

A pack of sheet masks. Cheap, light, easy to give away.

One night cream, if you are curious about Snail White. The white jar.

That is four items, it will not weigh anything, and it will cost less than one equivalent product at home.

Who this is for
→Anyone with oily or combination skin — Thai formulations are built for exactly this.
→Sunscreen sceptics — try a Thai one. The texture is the reason people convert.
→Gift shoppers — sheet masks, in bulk, from a supermarket.
→Sensitive skin — buy one thing, patch test, and skip the whitening aisle entirely.
